A Fast-Turnaround Video Is Won Before the Shoot Starts

I was hired to cover a real estate event and turn the footage into a series of social videos within a few days.

The schedule was tight enough that the normal cushion did not exist. We could not leave the event, slowly organize everything, experiment with several versions, and discover what the videos were supposed to be after the fact.

The only way to move that quickly was to make more decisions before production. I planned the shots and details I knew would appear in the final cuts, so the edit became closer to assembling a known set of pieces than searching through a pile of options.

During the event, we kept checking the list, protecting the must-have moments, and leaving enough time for another take where the schedule allowed it.

It was still stressful. Fast work does not become effortless because the plan is good. The difference is that the pressure has somewhere to go. Instead of guessing, the team can work down the list and know what remains unfinished.

When you cannot return for another shot and do not have days to reconsider the footage, write the non-negotiable list before the event begins.

If nothing else is captured, those are the scenes, statements, and details that still let the final video do its job. The result may not include every idea anyone had, but it can still be complete, useful, and delivered on time.
